The "éducation différenciée" (special education) sector offers parallel courses to pre-school and primary education for children with disabilities, including:
-
speech disorders and hearing impairments;
-
visual impairments;
-
impairments resulting from severe brain damage;
-
physical and motor disabilities;
-
learning difficulties;
-
impairments resulting from severe behavioural disorders;
-
impairments resulting from autism or psychosis.
The act of 14 March 1973 forms the basis of the legislation on special education. This organised the various specialist centres and institutes into a coherent system under the co-ordination of the education ministry's special education directorate.
