Cultural habits
"Fasnacht"-Traditions surrounding Carnival (Fasnacht) are rooted in ancient pagan ideas. The actual beginning of Carnival, Fat Thursday, is a special day because of "Ruassla" (sooting): the attempt to blacken each other’s faces with scorched corks. In some municipalities, the tradition of stealing the soup pot with its contents is upheld.
One of the most important traditions, which is also likely rooted in the pre-Christian era, is Funken or Küachle Sunday: On the first Sunday of Lent, winter is banished by burning it simbolically.
