Climate & Weather
What's probably the most popular small talk topic?
The weather!
To talk about typical weather in Austria in times of climate change might be a risky business, but nevertheless a few general remarks:
Austria is, like most of Europe, located in a temperate climatic zone. This basically means that there are four distinct seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter – and that the temperature in summer can reach 30°C (86°F) and more, whereas in winter it's likely to drop below 0°C (32°F). But since it's temperate, this also means that it's usually neither very, very hot nor very, very cold.

In general there's a difference between the Eastern and the Western part of the country: In the East summers typically are hot, winters not too cold and it doesn't rain that much. In the mountainous regions of Western Austria the climate is rougher with shorter summers, long and cold winters and a lot of rain or snow.
