The educational system of Montenegro consists of three basic stages: primary, secondary schools and university. It is worth noting that Montenegrin educational system has been in the process of reform from the beginning of 2000.

Primary school lasts nine years and primary education is compulsory and free. Children start goes to primary school at age of six. Education in primary school is divided into two parts. The first part is from the first to the fifth grade and the second from the fifth to the ninth. During the first period of school attendance, children learn from one teacher, while from the sixth grade they receive special subject teachers. After primary school, children are not required to enroll high school, but most of them enroll it.

Secondary school lasts four years. In state secondary schools education is free; while in some private schools students need to pay certain fees. Most common secondary schools are: grammar schools, economic, medical, musical and electrotechnical school. To accomplish secondary school, students must pass the state graduation. Assessment on the state graduation is one of the main conditions for admission to college.

University system is arranged according to the Bologna system. Basic studies last three (Bachelor Degree), Masters two, and PhD three years. In Montenegro, there are three universities.
