Travelling by Rail
Germany has a well-developed rail network that is used by numerous rail companies.
The largest rail company is "Deutsche Bahn" (German Rail), which was privatized in 1994 : There are also some smaller rail companies, mainly providing regional services.
These different types of train can be distinguished:
ICE (InterCityExpress): the fastest German train, reaching a speed of up to 300 km/h
IC/EC (InterCity/EuroCity): links major German cities. Top speed up to 200 km/h.
RE/RB/SE (Regionalexpress/Regionalbahn/Stadtexpress): run regularly between and in various German regions.
There are also busses, street cars, and the U and S bahns among other things. These are run by different companies varying by city. Be sure to check local information for times and tickets.
