Private transport

Car
Finland is a big country that is why Finns use cars quite a lot as a form of private transportation. There are some rules that you should know if you plan to drive in Finland. Using a seatbelt is mandatory. If the police pulls you over and you are not buckled up, you may get a fine. It is also forbidden to speak on the mobile phone whilst driving unless you are using a hands-free device. Lights of your car should be switched on when you are driving, no matter if it is during day light.

Driving license should always be with you when you are driving yourself. Please check the regulations about the acceptable driving licenses before driving!  Finnish Road Administration is responsible for Finland's public roads and the smoothness, comfort and safety of motor, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

Cars drive on the right and overtake on the left in Finland. Main roads are in good condition also during winter. Snow tyres are compulsory in Finland from 1 January to 28/29 February. Studded tires may be used from 1 November to 31 March or when weather conditions require it.

License holders from countries that have joined the Road Traffic Convention (Geneva 1949 or Vienna 1968) may drive in Finland on their national driving license for one year from the date of entry into the country. After six months, you are eligible for a Finnish driving license. The age requirement is eighteen. Please note that driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly forbidden in Finland. A driver can also be guilty of drunken driving or aggravated drunken driving when under the influence of other intoxicants than alcohol if his/her driving ability is impaired or seriously impaired. Infringement of these rules always results in penalties in the form of a fine or imprisonment.

Cycling & Walking
Finland has the most beautiful walking and cycling  roads. That is why Finns love cycling, even they continue cycling during the winter in  the dark and cold days. It would be cheap and easy for you to have a bike. You can find many bike shops or many bikes in the second hand shopes.

Finnish cities are built in nature, if the weather is convinient, it would be fun to cycle or walk. In most towns the bicycle paths and sidewalks are extensive and well kept.

When there is not possible to use a bicycle path, you should ride on the right side of the road. If you are on foot, and there is no sidewalk, you should walk on the left side of the road.
