Hitchhiking

Thumb up

It’s not so common anymore to hitchhike, but it still can be done. The best way to go is to ask around at gas stations. You’re not allowed to hitchhike on the highway, so to prevent you getting a fine we recommend to try your luck at the entranceway. Make sure you have a cardboard with the name of your destination, to broaden your chances.

In all countries in Europe it is legal to hitchhike, however it is illegal to hitchhike where pedestrians are banned, such as Motorways (United Kingdom and Germany) as it would be too dangerous for trucks to stop for hithhikers on such a busy road.

A more recent method is to go to websites and arrange your lifts beforehand. You can arrange a ride for free on www.hitchhikers.org

Caarpooling - reduce CO2 emissions

Some people might consider taking one car for going to the same destination (as to a same company location in the Netherlands). There are pages in dutch (like www.carpooldate.nl, www.a12carpool.nl, ..) that contribute to the idea of less cars = less pollution = less costs. They are asking some sort of cost-sharing to the passengers taken on the road but also offering a environmental friendly approach to the often completely blocked highways in the Netherlands.
