Higher education

French higher education is characterized by a great variety of institutions. Organization and admission procedures vary according to the type of institution and the purpose of the education provided. Higher education institutions include:

  • Universities. They cater for a large number of students ( 70% of higher education students) and provide a wide variety of study programmes, including basic and practical education.
  • Public or private colleges and institutes, called Grandes Ecoles, which provide higher specialised education under the supervision of various ministries.
  • Public or private colleges and institutes which provide short courses in technological, commercial, or paramedical training.

Advice:

  • Good information is a key to success… You know there are different Higher education institutions but… what type of institution is right for you? By choosing the right course at the right level, you will avoid disappointments. There is only one way to do this: learn about all the possibilities made available in the French educational system before committing yourself.
  • Where can you get the information? Learn about the profession you plan to study for, by contacting the following services:

Go to www.onisep.fr, then to “Les metiers”: all professions are listed in alphabetic order. If you speak French, of course…       - SCUIO (University Services of Information and Career Advising)There is one in each university. They all publish a guide introducing courses in the university, and some also publish a specific guide for foreign students. You’ll find the list of SCUIO on: http://www.scuio.org/scuioip_localisation.htm

      - CIDJ (Information and Documentation Centre for Youth)It provides documents on jobs and studies, classified in big categories (2.5 euros each document). Go to: www.cidj.com
