Festivals

 

Each year ancient theaters, green hill sides, old quarries turned into theaters, brim with audiences enjoying drama, international and local music and dance shows beneath the clear greek sky. From June through September, Greece showcases a unique cultural activity and for many years festivals have been an integral part of the country's psyche.

Athens & Epidaurus Festival

The oldest and best-known festival is the Athens Festival, organized by the cultural department of the GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organization) and hosted at the theatres of Herod Atticus and Lycabettus in Athens as well as in Epidaurus. The Festival runs from June to the end of September. In Athens, the Festival held in the 5,000-seat Roman theatre of Herodes Atticus below the Acropolis has been an annual event since 1955.
 
Initially planned to host ancient Greek drama and music performances, over the years it has extended its programme to include modern and contemporary theatre, music and dance. The theatre of Herodes Atticus, offering a breathtaking view of the lit-up Parthenon, has hosted some of the greatest performers, orchestras and artistic companies fromaround the world. These include Maria Callas, Leonard Bernstein, Mtislav Rostropovich, David Oistrach, Yehudi Menuhin, Colin Davis, the Bolshoi Ballet companies, the Berliner Ensemble, the National Theatre of Great Britain, the Netherlands Dance Theatre, the Dance Company of Pina Bausch and many others.
 
Since 1996, the Acropolis has been open to the public on every summer evening with a full moon and visitors can listen to concerts on the site.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival

Thessaloniki International Film Festival is one of the top Greece festivals,  The Festival is competitive with the International Section jury awarding several prizes each year, most notably the "Golden Alexander" for Best Feature-Length Film.attracting famous directors and actors of both the cinema and theater. The festival has become the one of the primary showcases for the work of new and emerging filmmakers in the Balkans and the wide South East area of Europe.

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival is held in November and it follows in importance the Cannes Film Festival in France and the Venice Film Festival in Italy. The Festival is competitive with the International Section jury awarding several prizes each year, most notably the "Golden Alexander" for Best Feature-Length Film which is accompanied by a cash prize of €40,000.

Rockwave Festival

Rockwave is the biggest musical festival in Greece, and one of the largest in Europe. The festival's history begins back in 1995, but its popularity has spread since 2004. The festival's location was constantly being changed until 2004, when event park TerraVibe Park, located in Malakassa, became the permanent host of the festival.

Some of the lineup artists through the years have included notably Judas Priest, Massive Attack, The Black Eyed Peas, Faithless, The Ting Tings, Marilyn Manson, Peter Gabriel, Pixies, Dio, Starsailor, HIM, Nick Cave, Madrugada and  PJ Harvey.

Video Art Festival

The Video Art Festival is an international event exhibiting digital media and aiming to promote the digital culture. Every year the festival takes place in the Technopolis in the area of Gazi and every new installation a leap forward. The Video Art Festival focuses on digital media, it involves nonetheless collaborating forms of exression like installation and performance arts fused with the use of digital technology.

More than 40 countries partake promoting collaborative relationships between acclaimed foreign festivals thus making it an international fair. The first festival took place in 2005 with 180 artists and 1000 people attending. In the coming years, the contributing artists would launch to the number of 1350 and has extended its collaboration with the municipality of Athens and the Ministry of Culture & Tourism as well as the General Secretariat for Youth.
