During the last decade, Greece has enjoyed economic and political stability. It has undergone significant infrastructure improvements and major reforms in the public sector as well as a programme of market liberalisation. All the latter have improved economic profile of the country.
Since January the 1st, of 2001, Greece entered the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The following year along with 10 more EMU countries replaced its local currency (Drachma) with the Euro. This was the result of impressive economic policy changes and growth over the last years, during which convergence towards European Union economic performance standards, in both nominal and real terms, has involved at a rapid pace.
